Although many believe Jailhouse Rock is Elvis Presley’s best film, in 1957 his fans were upset that their beloved Elvis played a convict with an unsavory ego and a quick temper. Vince Everett (Elvis) is in jail for manslaughter. His cellmate (Mickey Shaughnessy) convinces Vince to sing and immediately recognizes true talent. With the help of a talent scout (Judy Tyler), Vince becomes a rock star after he is released from jail. The dance sequence to the title song became the most recognized musical number in any Elvis movie and “Jailhouse Rock,” the song, became a No. 1 hit. For audiences in the 1950s, Jailhouse Rock fused rock and roll with Elvis’ own kinetic energy to create something that felt both new, unpredictable, and very cool. — Leanne von Mittenwald
