This multigenerational drama, directed by PCFF special guest Gregory Nava (Selena, El Norte), chronicles the lives of the Sánchez family across decades of struggle, resilience, and love. Spanning the 1920s to the late 20th century, it begins with José Sánchez’s (Jacob Vargas) long journey from Mexico to Los Angeles, where he builds a life with María (Jennifer Lopez) and raises a growing family in East Los Angeles. Each generation faces new challenges — deportation, identity struggles, the pursuit of the American Dream — while holding tightly to culture and connection. Edward James Olmos anchors the film as Paco, the family’s reflective narrator, whose voice weaves together memory, history, and generational perspective. Featuring powerful performances from an all-star cast, the film offers an intimate, heartfelt portrait of Mexican American life. In 2024, it was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry for its cultural and historical significance. — Jaime Mendez
