Madagascar

Released by Dreamworks in 2005, this animated film about four zoo animals who get stranded on the island of Madagascar focuses on the relationship between nature, civilization and freedom. When Marty (Chris Rock), a zebra, grows tired of his life in the zoo, he attempts to escape. After being followed by his friends Alex the lion (Ben Stiller), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the hippopotamus (Jada Pinkett Smith), they find themselves in crates getting shipped to Kenya, due to an animal rights activist group protesting for their release. When they accidentally fall out of the hijacked ship, the group washes ashore on the island of Madagascar, and while adapting to their new environment, they also explore themes of identity and staying true to oneself. — Katia Krassin
