American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez

2023 Plaza Classic guest Edward James Olmos recreated his El Pachuco voice from Zoot Suit to narrate this fast-paced and insightful documentary about the singular life and career of iconic Chicano filmmaker and playwright Luis Valdez, who gave voice to Chicano stories and culture. Valdez, who appeared at the 2025 Plaza Classic with his breakthrough films La Bamba and Zoot Suit, found his voice with El Teatro Campesino as part of activist Cesar Chavez’s his United Farm Workers movement. They later split, well before recent allegations of sexual abuse by Chavez. It was through theater that Valdez found his way to Hollywood, with Zoot Suit being both the first musical directed by a Chicano on Broadway. Director David Alvarado pieces together his story with numerous interviews and tons of rare archival images and footage. American Pachuco debuted this year at the Sundance Film Festival and aired on PBS. — Doug Pullen
