El Paso Film Festival Features Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez

The El Paso Film Festival is proud to announce filmmaker Robert Rodriguez as this year’s featured guest who will be presenting his new film “Red 11.” Rodriguez will lead a filmmaking Master Class at 7p.m. on October 24 at the Plaza Theatre, which will mark the official kick-off to the 2019 festival.

The exclusive class will reveal Rodriguez’s process to produce his new sci-fi thriller, “Red 11” while confronted with the same challenges he faced while making “El Mariachi.” For “Red 11” Rodriguez employed the skills of his sons, Racer and Rebel, showcasing a passion and talent for film that spans generations as father and sons wrote the film based on Rodriguez’s experience inside a research hospital where he sold his body to finance “El Mariachi.” The title — “Red 11” — is significant because it was the shirt color and number assigned to Rodriguez inside the research hospital.

Rodriguez, is a director from San Antonio, Texas, best known for the films “Sin City” starring Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba, “Spy Kids” starring Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino, and “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Johnny Depp. Rodriguez wrote the script to his own role as a filmmaker 25 years ago with the highly-acclaimed film “El Mariachi” that he produced on his own for $7,000.

Rodriguez’s films are beloved in the El Paso region, and the 2019 El Paso Film Festival will showcase the ways communities can be brought together through film.

“I’m finally able to bring someone near and dear to my heart and that’s Robert Rodriguez with his newest film ‘Red 11,’” El Paso Film Festival creator Carlos Corral told KTSM. “I first met him while attending college at the University of Texas at Austin and he’s one of the main reasons I became a filmmaker myself. We’re bringing him to our film festival as a way to inspire the next generation of El Paso Filmmakers.”
